The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
