Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
